Overcome

Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭17-21‬ (NASB)

When someone does evil to you, don’t repay them in kind. Respect what is right, and make peace with others where you can. Let God have His vengeance – because He will.

When someone does evil to you, do good to them instead, and they may feel the pain of remorse and guilt. In this way, you overcome evil.

If you repay evil with evil, you will be overcome by evil.

We are called to do good, to do right. God will repay men’s evil. Vengeance belongs only to Him.

Don’t take revenge. Have respect for what’s right. Make peace.

Only His grace gives us the capability to overcome evil with good.

Know That He Is God

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change<
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
The holy dwelling places of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered;
He raised His voice, the earth melted.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
Come, behold the works of the LORD,
Who has wrought desolations in the earth.
He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariots with fire.
"Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
Psalm ‭46‬:‭1-11‬ (NASB)

God is with His people and protects them no matter the disaster surrounding them. When enemies attack, he has ultimate power over everything and protects His people, destroying the enemy. Striving – against Him (as an enemy) or in His place (His fearful people) is pointless. He will be known and exalted.

God has power over the violence of men, even over the very earth. He will be exalted. He provides protection, peace for His people, even in the midst of disaster and attack.

As children of God, we have no need to fear anything in this world. He is with His people. He is our stronghold. He has power over our enemy. He even has power over death, which He has already shown through Christ’s resurrection.

He will protect His people from destruction.

He is with us, in control, in power at all times. When we forget this truth, we fall to fear. We must cease our striving and know that He is God, that He is in control, that He is with us.

Love Covers All Transgressions

Hatred stirs up strife,
But love covers all transgressions.

Proverbs‬ ‭10‬:‭12‬ NASB

We need love, and we need to give love. God has shown us love, and He has shown us how to love through Christ, His Son. He wants us to love as He has loved us.

God doesn’t want us to stir up strife, but to love one another, forgiving sins, preserving peace. Sadly, though we have seen His love for us through the blood of Christ spilled on the cross, we must be reminded to love rather than hate.

When fellow believers sin, we often look for ways to expose their sins, to bring them to justice. (Now, there comes a time when – if a believer refuses to repent – sins must be exposed in the course of biblical church discipline. We have not reached that point – we’re talking here about beginning this process from a place of love.) Instead, let’s ask God to change our desires. Ask for the desire to love them, forgive their transgressions, and keep peace.

Love. Don’t hate.

Forgive. Don’t condemn.
